Message from the Chair

Hello NEMLites!

Late August and September are always a busy time with the start of school, but this year also brought devastation from Hurricane Irene’s trip up the coast from North Carolina, along with the worst flooding in a century in upstate New York and Vermont, homes lost on Long Island Sound, and downed trees and power lines throughout New England. Given the destruction and loss of life, a few days without power, water, or phone, were merely an inconvenience. I hope that your homes and libraries were not damaged due to the storm, but the flooding makes that hope seem forlorn. If your library suffered due to the recent storms, or you have other needs that your fellow NEMLA members can help with, please let us know.

The Board met this summer in New Haven. We are now using Google Docs to help ensure continuity as Board members rotate off and new ones join. The Board is planning several enhancements to our social networking sites. Did you know that NEMLA has a Facebook Group? It will soon become a page that you may “like” rather than join, but in the meantime please join our group by searching for New England Music Library Association on Facebook.

We have an important anniversary approaching. The Spring meeting in 2013 will mark the 50th anniversary of NEMLA. Our Board and Program Committee have been working on plans already, but we would welcome your thoughts and suggestions for how to celebrate our 50 years of service in support of music libraries and collections in New England.

It was gratifying to welcome twelve first-time attendees to our Boston meeting in the spring and I hope you will all be able to join us at our Fall meeting on Friday, October 14th, in the beautiful hills of Connecticut’s northwest corner. Norfolk is the home of the Yale Summer Chamber Music Festival, a legacy of the Battell and Stoeckel families that for two centuries greatly influenced and enhanced the study and programming of music Norfolk and at Yale. Anna Kijas and the Program Committee have put together an exciting program. You will find the program, along with recommendations for travel and accommodation in these pages.

Respectfully submitted,

Secretary-Treasurer's Report

By now, many of you will have received a message inviting you to renew your membership to NEMLA, or to join for the first time. NEMLA's membership year runs from September through August. If you have allowed your membership to lapse in recent years, you will be pleased to find that dues have not increased for some time. Should you be uncertain as to whether your membership is about to expire, I will gladly investigate: simply email me. You may easily renew your membership by visiting our website.

You may also register for the autumn NEMLA meeting online. If you prefer, you are welcome to pay your meeting registration fee with cash or a check on site, or with a check by mail (please see here for the relevant forms and mailing address).

NEMLA welcomes first-time meeting attendees by waiving the registration fee. We simply ask that all participants submit a paper or electronic registration form in advance so that they may receive a nametag upon arrival at the meeting, as well as to ensure adequate refreshments.

Paul Hawkshaw will discuss the history of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival since the days of the Stoeckel family.

Jonathan Manton will present on the progress of the Benjamin Britten Thematic Catalogue Project, a forthcoming musicological research resource that aims to detail the composer’s works online. His work for the project has notably included the documentation and analysis of approximately 1,150 original manuscript sources that constitute the 735 works Britten wrote between the ages of five and 18.

Afternoon Session:

Ann Havemeyer will discuss the Battell family's role in the promotion of music in the 19th century from the formation of a singing society in the 1820s to the introduction of the singing of glees later in the century and the founding of the Litchfield County Choral Union and the widely acclaimed Norfolk Music Festival in the early 20th century. She will also examine the family's support of music at Yale and its patronage of Gustave

Lodging in Norfolk:

Finding overnight accommodations during the height of leaf-peeping season can be a challenge. We have listed a few suggestions below for those who want to drive in early:

Manor House (860.542.5690) provides “a romantic setting in downtown Norfolk”. A 5 minute walk to the Battell House; it had only 2 rooms available at press time.

Mountain View Inn (860.542.6991), a 5-7 minute walk from the Battell house offers a full breakfast (see www.mvinn.com) and lodging prices of $120- $225 for Thursday night. Weekend rates are higher.

Blackberry River Inn (860.542.5100) offers “colonial accommodations and mountain views” and a full breakfast. It is a 3 minute drive to the Battell House. Prices range from $129-$289. (See www.blackberryriverinn.com)

Other accommodations in the surrounding areas are listed at: http://music.yale.edu/norfolk/scenic_norfolk/lodging.htm

In addition, you may also want to consider lodging in nearby Torrington, Connecticut if price is your primary consideration.

Virginia Danielson Accepts New Position in Abu Dhabi:

After 12 years as the Richard F. French Librarian of the Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library, Virginia Danielson stepped down in June to take a position as the Associate Librarian for Collections and Public Services at New York University’s new Abu Dhabi campus. In her new position, she will provide leadership in the planning and implementation of innovative reference, instruction, and access services, and work to develop on-site collections appropriate to the new campus’ academic programs.

Danielson’s work at Harvard spans more than two decades, as a catalog assistant, project manager, Keeper of the Isham Memorial Library, and curator of the Archive of World Music. In 1998, she was appointed acting director of the Loeb Music Library, and in 1999 was named the French Librarian. In her time at Loeb Music, Danielson played a leading role in transforming music librarianship and audio preservation at Harvard and in the wider academic world.

Dr. Sarah Adams, Keeper of the Isham Memorial Library, is serving as interim head of the library. Adams, a musicologist specializing in the 18th century, is also Director of the U.S. RISM Office and editor of Six symphonies for Baron van Swieten, in the C.P.E. Bach Complete Works edition.

CBB Libraries Initiate Cooperative Music Scores Approval Plan:

The Colby, Bates and Bowdoin College Libraries are in the second year of a cooperatively profiled music scores approval plan, utilizing Theodore Front Musical Literature as a vendor. The CBB music scores approval plan uses a combination of parameters to hone new music selections, including new issues composed by Pulitzer Prize winners, genre, instrumentation, publisher, and price. All scores freely circulate and are reflected in “CBBcat,” the cooperative catalog to CBB collections. Colby, Bates and Bowdoin library holdings are also reflected in the statewide catalog, “MaineCat”, and thus strengthen the accessibility of printed music available for circulation within the state of Maine.

The decision to move to cooperative music scores collection development was initiated by the CBB music collections librarians several years ago after the successful implementation of a cooperative book approval plan (YBP) that resulted is less book duplication amongst the three colleges, and thus reduced expenditures for books at all three colleges. This enabled the CBB libraries to invest in a more systematic plan for music acquisitions. For more information feel free to contact one of the CBB music scores collections librarians: Karen Jung (Music Librarian at Bowdoin College), Margaret Ericson (Art and Music Librarian at Colby College), Sharon Saunders (Systems Librarian and Music Scores Collections).

Northeastern University Faculty Members Publish Book about Local Musician:

Boston’s Jazz Legend: The Al Vega Story is written by Leonard L. Brown, Associate Professor of African American Studies & Music at Northeastern University with a foreword by Ron Della Chiesa.

The book chronicles Al’s life in his own words. The time span begins in his childhood in Chelsea during the 1920’s to his embracing jazz during the swing era in his early teenage years and sitting in with great masters such as Red Allen and Sidney Bechet. It covers his WWII experiences and the bebop years of the late 40’s and 50’s at the legendary Boston jazz clubs, the Hi-Hat and Storyville, where Al performed with such legends as Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. The story then explores Al’s experiences with the music of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s including a unique musical venture with Boston Celtics’ K.C. Jones, “Satch” Sanders and Sam Jones and Al’s creation of the famous vocal showcases that were so important to the careers of many singers. The final chapters of the book focus on his latest musical ventures and his incredible 50+ year legacy as a baseball coach and manager in Everett.

For more information, email Leonard.brown@gmail.com or call 508-877-7605.
