Presentation Descriptions

Paul Hawkshaw will discuss the Battell family collection and archives, and the process of making it accessible to scholars and the public.

Jonathan Manton will present on the progress of the Benjamin Britten Thematic Catalogue Project, a forthcoming musicological research resource that aims to detail the composer’s works online. His work for the project has notably included the documentation and analysis of approximately 1,150 original manuscript sources that constitute the 735 works Britten wrote between the ages of five and 18.

Ann Havemeyer will discuss the Battell family’s role in the promotion of music in the 19th century from the formation of a singing society in the 1820s to the introduction of the singing of glees later in the century and the founding of the Litchfield County Choral Union and the widely acclaimed Norfolk Music Festival in the early 20th century. She will also examine the family’s support of music at Yale and its patronage of Gustave Stoeckel, the first Battell Professor of Music at the college.

Take Route 44 West to Norfolk. Turn left onto Route 272 South in the town center. The Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate will be on your right.

From the New York City area:

Take the Taconic State Parkway, North to Millbrook. Take exit 44E onto Route 44 East to Norfolk. Turn right onto Route 272 South in the town center. The Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate will be on your right.

From the New Haven area:

Take Route 63 North (Amity Road) to Route 8. Turn right onto Route 8 North to Winsted. Take exit to Route 44 West and continue to Norfolk. Turn left onto Route 272 South in the town center. The Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate will be on your right.

From Boston and Springfield:

Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) to exit 6 for I-291 towards Springfield. Take I-291 West to I-91 South. Follow I-91 to exit 40 onto Route 20 West (towards Bradley International Airport). Take a left onto Route 219 South (Barkhamsted Rd). Continue on Route 219 South, through a brief merge with Route 179, to Route 318. Take a right onto Route 318 West (Saville Dam Rd/ Pleasant Valley Rd). Take a right onto Route 44 West (New Hartford Rd). Follow Route 44 into Norfolk, taking a left onto Route 272 South in the town center. The Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate will be on your right.

From Albany:

Take I-90 East to Exit B3 onto NY Route 22 South toward Austerlitz. Take the first left onto MA Route 102 East. Turn right onto MA Route 41 South, then bear left onto Route 7 South to Canaan. Turn left onto Route 44 East to Norfolk. Turn right onto Route 272 South in the town center. The Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate will be on your right.

Nearest Greyhound stations: Winsted and Canaan. NOTE: Both require a 10 mile cab drive to Norfolk.

From Winsted: Take Route 44 West to Norfolk. Turn left onto Route 272 South in the town center. The Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate will be on your right.

From Canaan: Take Route 44 East to Norfolk. Turn right onto Route 272 South in the town center. The Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate will be on your right.

Nearest train stations: Hartford (Amtrak) and Waterbury (MTA Metro North). NOTE: Both require a 40 mile cab drive to Norfolk.

From Hartford: Follow the directions above.

From Waterbury: Take Route 8 North (James H Darcey Memorial Highway) to exit 44 (US-202 toward downtown Torrington). Take your first left onto East Elm Street (Route 4). Continue across Main Street, taking a right onto Route 272 North (Norfolk/Litchfield Rd). The Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate will be on your left shortly before the Norfolk town center.

Lodging in Norfolk

Finding overnight accommodations during the height of leaf peeping season can be a challenge. We have listed a few suggestions below for those who want to drive in early:

The Manor House (860.542.5690) provides “a romantic setting in downtown Norfolk”. A 5 minute walk to the Battell House; it had only 2 rooms available at press time.

Mountain View Inn (860.542.6991), a 5-7 minute walk from the Battell house offers a full breakfast and lodging prices of $120- $225 for Thursday night. Weekend rates are higher.

Blackberry River Inn (860.542.5100) offers “colonial accommodations and mountain views” and a full breakfast. It is a 3 minute drive to the Battell House. Prices range from $129-$289.

In addition, you may also want to consider lodging in nearby Torrington, Connecticut if price is your primary consideration.
