10:30-11:15 Immigrant Music Librarians in the U.S

Diversity is not all about race or other matters, but it is also about individuals’ cultural backgrounds. This presentation will talk about “immigrant music librarians and library staff in the United States,” and it will review/present how they shaped and served the country’s diverse library community regardless of the challenges they faced. Their unique perspective and background influenced the community users and the profession in a valuable way
Nurhak Tuncer, Elizabeth City State University

11:30-12:00 Lightning Talks

Overview of Wesleyan’s Indian music collection

Wesleyan University’s World Music Archives’ South Asian music collection houses arguably the largest, most important holdings of South Indian (Karnatak) music recordings in the Western hemisphere. It also includes a substantial (and equally important) number of recordings of music from North India. In keeping with the notion of “World Music” (a term coined at Wesleyan in 1962 by ethnomusicologist Robert E. Brown and used to reference all music globally including Western art music) and the  diversity it implies, we will give a brief overview of our Indian music collection as one that is as culturally and stylistically varied as music here in the US.
Jody Comack Viswanathan, World Music Archives, Wesleyan University and Aaron Bittel, Director of the World Music Archives & Music Librarian, Wesleyan University

3:00 – 3:45 We’re Still Here!: Teaching Research Remotely

In this presentation, we will share successful outreach and instruction strategies that we employed in three music classes: a General Education course on the Golden Record, an undergraduate course on gender and music, and an Introduction to Musicology seminar for new graduate students. We will discuss the role that collaborative design played in the development of both synchronous and asynchronous research modules and share ideas for increasing student familiarity with library services and resources

3:45-4:45 Virtual Listening Party

Close out your day at NEMLA by joining us for an all-genre virtual Listening Party whose themes are diversity & protest. We’ll move into the listening session at 3:45 and tracks will be played through YouTube inside of the existing Zoom meeting. If there is a song you’d like to share, find the YouTube link to that track using another browser (or find it in advance), and then put the link into the Zoom chat. Anyone else can use the chat for sharing reactions to the song we’re all listening to together. The session will be one hour, and we’ll do our best to play as many songs as possible.

Peter Laurence, Librarian for Recorded Sound and Media, Loeb Music Library, Harvard University
